Point your camera at a garment's care label, and the AI reads the ISO 3758 symbols printed on it — wash, bleach, dry, iron, and professional-care — plus any printed text instructions, then explains what each one means in plain language.
What it recognizes
- Washing, bleaching, drying, ironing, and professional-care (dry-clean) symbols
- Printed text-only care instructions (common on US labels, e.g. "Machine Wash Cold. Tumble Dry Low.")
- Fabric composition printed on the label (e.g. "60% Cotton, 40% Polyester")
- A confidence indicator with every scan — shown as high, medium, or low, never a flat pass or fail
There's no separate temperature reading. The wash temperature limit is read directly off the wash symbol itself — the same way it's printed on the physical label — not delivered as a second, standalone number.
How it works
- Capture the label. Take a photo with your camera, or choose one from your photo library.
- The AI reads it. Symbols, printed text, and fabric composition are analyzed together.
- Get a plain-language explanation. Each symbol found is explained, with a confidence indicator for the result.
What can go wrong
Image quality matters — glare, heavy shadows, steep angles, or a blurry or partially cropped photo are the most common reasons a scan comes back incomplete.
Unusual, damaged, or non-standard labels can confuse the reading, and the AI itself is fallible — it can misread a symbol or miss one entirely, especially at low confidence.
The garment's own printed label is always the final authority. Treat the app's reading as a helpful interpretation, not a replacement for checking the physical label yourself when something matters — like an expensive or delicate item.
Camera and photo-library permissions on iPhone and iPad
The first time you scan a label or add a photo, Laundry Master asks iOS for camera or photo-library access, with this exact reason shown before the system prompt:
Camera “This app needs camera access to take photos of your clothing and care labels.”
Photos “This app needs photo library access to select photos of your clothing and care labels.”
Android is different, not just differently worded
Laundry Master's Android app doesn't declare a camera permission at all. Taking a photo opens your device's own Camera app, and that app handles its own permission — Laundry Master never touches the camera hardware directly and never shows its own in-app camera prompt on Android. There's no Android equivalent of the iOS text above to compare it to, because the app itself never asks.
Internet required
Scanning sends the photo to our AI service for analysis, so it needs a connection — there's no offline scanning mode.
Included on every plan
Care-label scanning is not tier-gated — it's available to guest, free, and Premium accounts alike, never rationed as "unlimited" for one plan and something less for another.
